Land Use Committee Discusses New Seasons Development

Discussion of parking, traffic and design issues of the next New Seasons store to be built just outside of King in the Eliot neighborhood was a main topic at the last Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods land use and transportation committee meeting. Vernon Seeks Help Opposing 7-Eleven on Killingsworth

From the Vernon NA:

The Vernon Neighborhood Association Board has officially decided to oppose the 7-Eleven development due to the existence of three locally and minority-owned convenient stores within one block of the proposed location, which would be threatened by a 7-Eleven. We are also concerned about traffic safety impacts on bicyclists and pedestrians, especially the children walking to Vernon School each day and those that use the Number 8 bus. We also feel strongly that a 7-Eleven will not help improve the safety and livability of our neighborhood.

However, according to City officials, the CS zoning at the location allows convenient stores to be built. Our plan is to put pressure on the City and the property owner (who is about to sign a 10 year lease with 7-11) to reconsider their decision. Neighbors around Portland have successfully been able to do this in the past. Your actions count!

Public Meetings to Discuss “Respectful Traveling” on Williams

Dear North Williams Community Members,

This summer, the City of Portland will run a special educational campaign to encourage safe and respectful traveling on North Williams.

While discussions about changes to the roadway continue as part of the North Williams Traffic Safety Project, we have heard loud and clear from the community that how people interact with one another while traveling up North Williams is just as important as engineering, and that conditions on the street feel dangerous today and should be addressed as soon as possible.

KNA Seeks Safer Crossing at MLK/Failing

The King Neighborhood Association has requested that the City of Portland make pedestrian safety a higher priority at Failing Street. A high number of vehicle pedestrian conflicts and an ever-increasing number of residential units in the area spurred the letter. The letter states:

Several near-fatal accidents have occurred at this intersection in recent history, one involving a young mother carrying her child across the street, and an aggressive driver sped up and honked at the pedestrian; another when an elderly gentleman was clipped by a car but fortunately not gravely injured six months ago. The King Neighborhood Association invites you to find a way to help us mitigate the unsafe crossing now in place at this intersection.

The association requests that, at a minimum, a marked crossing be installed. Other, more expensive options include a pedestrian activated signal.
