Broadway Bridge to Close for Two Months

The Broadway Bridge in central Portland is scheduled to be closed from Tuesday July 6 to Sept. 3 for all motorized vehicles due to streetcar construction.

N Broadway will be closed west of N Larrabee Street and NW Broadway will be closed to through traffic north of NW Hoyt Street. The NW Lovejoy Street ramp at the bridge will be closed to all traffic east of NW Ninth Avenue. Access to Union Station will be maintained.

The traveling public should expect traffic delays on Broadway, Weidler and Lovejoy and use detours. Westbound motorized traffic will be detoured to the Burnside and Steel bridges, and eastbound traffic will be detoured toward I-405 and the Fremont Bridge.

Construction schedules are subject to change. More information about alternate bicycle and pedestrian routes will be released prior to the closure. The Portland Bureau of Transportation appreciates travelers’ patience during what may be one of the busiest construction seasons in Oregon history.

Build-a-Burger for Foodshare Fund NE

Enjoy a fresh, local Burger and Support Foodshare Fund NE! Please join us on the Sunday, 4th of July for “Build-a-Burger!” at King Portland Farmers Market. Get a $5 meat or veggie burger fresh grilled at the market from 11 am – 1 pm. The market is situated beside a park with play equipment, making for a perfect holiday picnic.

Foodshare Fund Northeast, a project of the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods (NECN), is in its second year of providing matching funds for our neighbors using food stamps to buy fresh, local food at the market. Nearly one in five Oregonians is now receiving food stamps, 39% of them children.

This year, in response to a growing and urgent need, we’ve expanded the program. Foodshare Fund NE provides funds from our community — businesses, community groups, neighbors — to match food stamps spent at King dollar for dollar, up to $10 per week. Last year, the average match was $234 per Sunday. This year it has risen to $1000 per Sunday. Help us meet our goal to run this project through the full season until October without running out of matching funds.

Build-a-Burger to Fight Hunger

The King Portland Farmers Market is in full swing Sundays from 10 am until 2 pm at the King neighborhood facility, NE 7th & Wygant.

Foodshare Fund Northeast, a project of the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods (NECN), is also in full swing. NECN Portland Public Safety Roundtable

Join people in your neighborhood for a discussion about what public safety is and how we can address the variety of public safety issues in our neighborhoods.

Why? We have heard from people through the 12 neighborhoods that there are a variety of public safety concerns. In response to this, we have worked with a few neighborhood association board members to design an event that will bring neighbors together with the community resources that can help address your public safety needs.

What will happen at the Roundtable? We will have presentations from different organizations who are addressing public safety in different ways. Then you will be able to meet in your neighborhood groups to determine what specific public safety issues you would like to work on in your neighborhood, and start thinking about how to make that happen.

Grant High VP Selected as King Principal

At the end of this school year, Kim Patterson, a Vice Principal at Grant with a long and varied resume in education as teacher, counselor, curriculum coordinator and administrator, will take over as King School Principal. Ms. Patterson pledges to be visible in the community, reach out to parents, and raise achievement and innovation at the school while making the building and grounds more attractive. Prior to the transition on July 1st, she will be meeting individually with staff members to forge a good working relationship and to learn of their hopes and dreams for the school.
