Charter Review: Progress Report & Public Hearings

On March 31, 2022, the Charter Commission reached a key milestone, preliminarily agreeing on a package of reforms to advance to voters. All 20 Charter Commission members supported the package, which would recommend three major changes:

  • Allowing voters to rank candidates in order of their preference, using ranked choice voting
  • Four new geographic districts with three members elected to represent each district, expanding the city council to a total of 12 members
  • A city council that focuses on setting policy and a mayor elected citywide to run the city’s day-to-day operations, with the help of a professional city administrator

The Charter Commission invites community members to provide input on the proposed charter amendments before its final vote on June 14, 2022. There will be a series of four public hearings to hear from community members and to help refine the proposed package of reforms. Three of the public hearings will be hybrid (online & in-person) and one in-person-only. Portlanders can also submit written public comment. The public comment period on the proposed amendments ends on May 30 at 5pm. The Commission would love to hear from you and we encourage you to testify!

Community members will be given 3-minutes each to provide input. If you would like to give testimony, sign-up in advance using this form!

It’s a fact of life that no matter who you are, you’re aging. But do you really know what that process is all about? Is getting old something to fear and dread, or does it provide an upside of surprising benefits not possible to enjoy at younger ages? In this engaging event, you’ll get to ask a gerontologist your questions about aging and how age discrimination affects it.

Together we’ll bust some negative stereotypes and social myths about older adults, and you’ll receive practical tips for how to deal with the ageism that keeps people of all generations from fully contributing to society.
