2012 Neighborhood Small Grants and Graffiti Abatement Grants: $30,444 Available!

The Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods is offering $23,794 in small grant funds and $6,650 in graffiti abatement funds to neighborhood, business and community-based groups. NECN will offer $1000-$4000 per project within the Neighborhood Small Grant program and up to $2,500 per graffiti abatement project. Past projects funded by NECN include community orchards, tours of African American murals, afterschool programs, community outreach projects, website design, murals, graffiti clean-up and multicultural festivals.

The goal of the grant program is to provide opportunities for building community and increasing and sustaining involvement in neighborhood associations, district coalitions and the community at-large. This program prioritizes engagement of historically under-represented organizations representing people of color, immigrants and refugees, low-income families, youth, people with disabilities, and lesbian, gay, bi and transgendered people.

Dragons to Visit King School Park

Bring a blanket or chair and come out for this year’s movie in King School Park, How to Train Your Dragon. The show is this Saturday, August 6th at dusk. There will be pre-movie entertainment with live music by Norman and free popcorn. Last year’s movie night turned a bit chilly so bring some layers or an extra blanket–you never know!

From IMDb.com:

Long ago up North on the Island of Berk, the young Viking, Hiccup, wants to join his town’s fight against the dragons that continually raid their town. However, his macho father and village leader, Stoik the Vast, will not allow his small, clumsy, but inventive son to do so. Regardless, Hiccup ventures out into battle and downs a mysterious Night Fury dragon with his invention, but can’t bring himself to kill it. Instead, Hiccup and the dragon, whom he dubs Toothless, begin a friendship that would open up both their worlds as the observant boy learns that his people have misjudged the species. But even as the two each take flight in their own way, they find that they must fight the destructive ignorance plaguing their world.

Special thanks to our local sponsors who offset KNA’s contribution to the Movie in the Park program:

Garage Sale Tomorrow–Bring Out Your Stuff!

We are still entering registrations as they trickle in for our first Garage Sale Day. It has been a learning experience and we will be much smoother next year. After your sale, let us know how it went and what to do differently. Make sure your sale is listed before tonight by going to the large map page with details.

Tell every last soul you know via Facebook or however people communicate these days to come and tour the sales and while they’re at it, to like the KNA Facebook page.

Registrations received after the deadline may not receive a yard sign due to the cutoff time to print them but you will be listed on the map. Again, let us know how to improve the whole event for next year and what the best date for next year’s sale would be.
