The King Farmers Market will open its second season on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 10:00 am at NE 7th and Wygant (a block south of Alberta, adjacent to King School Park.) The market will continue every Sunday, 10 am to 2 pm, through October 31.

After a highly successful first season, the King Farmers Market is back, bigger and better than before with more produce vendors, more special events, music, meat, cheese, cut flowers, plant starts, hot food, cooking demonstrations, and an adjacent children’s playground. This year, Oregon Trail Card (food stamp) users can receive up to $10 in matching tokens for use at the King Farmers Market.

Join your neighbors on May 2 and every Sunday to celebrate a new season of the freshest local food.

Future of Covered Structure in King School Park to be Determined

kingschoolparkPeggy Glascock of the Parks Bureau will present plans regarding the deteriorating structure at King School Park at our next meeting. Other possible topics of conversation could include: maintenance issues at the park, how the long term plan can better serve the needs of residents and farmer’s market attendees, and how the school district’s desire for a covered play area influences the decision making process of the parks bureau.

The recently opened King Farmers Market is now giving Oregon Food Stamp recipients an extra boost. With the help of the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, the Portland Farmers Market and the Alberta Food Co-Op, the Foodshare Fund Northeast will give users of Food Stamps an extra $5 at the King Farmers Market.
The market is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays until October 25th near the intersection of NE 7th Avenue and Wygant Street.

Each Portland Farmers Market accepts EBT transactions. Recipients of Food Stamps merely need to convert their EBT credits into EBT tokens at the market’s information booth. The tokens can only be used for fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, poultry, dairy and seeds and plants intended for growing food. They can’t be used for pre-made or hot foods.
The fund began with a $3,000 grant from Alberta Co-op Grocery and a matching donations from the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods and the King Farmers Market Advisory Council. With future donations, organizers are hoping to expand the program by giving additional food credits to people in need.

Contributions can be mailed to 4815 NE 7th Ave. Portland, OR 97211 or online at http://www.necoalition.org.

King Famer's Market

King Famer's Market

What an amazing experience! Our first King Farmers Market felt like the festival we hoped it would be—a celebration of community and abundance and the spirit of this place on Earth where we are privileged to live. We don’t have the count yet, but I know that Portland Farmers Market and the vendors were absolutely blown away by the number of people streaming into our market. Shane Baker of Gala Springs Farm figures that he sold a third more today than he did yesterday at PSU. He was one of several vendors who sold out. The Draper Girls sold more apples today than they have at any market location ever. The Hacienda tamale ladies were out of product before 1:00. Mike, the Breakfast Burrito guy was as well. Sol Pops had to make two trips back to their factory to restock. Everyone said they will bring a lot more next week.

People were having a ball. After they did their shopping, they didn’t want to leave. They sat listening to the music (there will be three bands next week, including some jazz) or picnicked on the grass in the park while their children played on the playground. We have a recurring neighborhood gathering where friends will meet and hang out together.

I am so grateful for our Council. In just five weeks they have formed themselves into effective, productive teams, figured out what needed to be done, and made our market a roaring success. Much remains for us to do, but today, I hope they are enjoying warm feelings of accomplishment.
