From the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods:
Are you interested in learning about the history of Portland from local leaders and understanding why it is relevant today? How do you get more participation from your group?
Join the dynamic Local Leaders Institute this Friday, Nov 12 from 5-8pm and Saturday, Nov 13 from 10am-3pm in NE Portland. http://bit.ly/LocalLeadersInstitute
Come out Friday evening and hear from local and national representatives from Portland, Oregon. Spend an evening and dinner with former Senator Margaret Carter, former City Commissioner candidate Betty Harris and Vancouver Avenue Baptist Pastor J.W. Hennessee. The topics will cover the history of the Neighborhood System and its initial purpose and role in local government and in the community; the local history of Portland and the changes to culture, environment and demographics; and how to become a motivated leader in your community. Each presenter will speak, followed by a question and answer session. The amount of rich history and energy present for this session will be fantastic!
On Saturday morning, participants will explore the pros and cons of different decision-making processes. After lunch, (which is provided), participants will learn about Intergroup dialogue presented by Portland Human Rights Commission. This training brings people together from different social groups who have a history of conflict or potential for conflict. The Portland Human Rights Commission’s ultimate goal is that we, as Portlanders, work collectively to dismantle longstanding barriers and implement actions that advance social equity.
Trainers include Koffi Dessou (Portland Human Rights Commission), Jeri Williams (Office of Neighborhood Involvement, Neighborhood Program Coordinator), Paige Coleman (Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, Executive Director) and Imani Muhammad (Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, Community Initiatives Coordinator).
Both days of this year’s Local Leaders Institute will be held at the Community Conference Room at the Planned Parenthood Building; 3727 NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Portland, OR, 97212.
Please note: the parking lot is available for Friday night only. On Saturday, we have been asked to park on the street.
Please donate just a bit of your time or money to attend this great training event! $40 for both days, $20 for Friday night only, $35 for Saturday only, or three valuable volunteer hours at the training!
