Another 24-hour convenience store in our neighborhood? Do we need a 7-11 of our own (so close on the heels of the 7-11 Corporation’s decision to open a store two-thirds of a mile away, in the Vernon neighborhood)? Join us tomorrow evening for a community discussion about 7-11’s plans to build and open a store at MLK & Sumner, and hear how neighbors on Sumner Street would like to see their street develop instead.

Also, folks in our neighborhood will be talking about the projects they’ve created to build a healthy and connected neighborhood. We welcome everyone!

Land Use Committee Discusses New Seasons Development

Discussion of parking, traffic and design issues of the next New Seasons store to be built just outside of King in the Eliot neighborhood was a main topic at the last Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods land use and transportation committee meeting. Free Events at Artists Repertory Theatre

Opening March 6, Artists Rep presents David Mamet’s RACE, a provocative look at discrimination, bigotry, and how we tackle, or avoid, the issues of race in our lives.

Artists Rep, in partnership with the August Wilson Red Door Project, is proud to host a forum on race and how our society, and legal system, are affected by racial issues. Artists Repertory Theatre is sincerely interested in deepening its connection and commitment to the Portland community and facilitating conversations that foster understanding, growth, and compassion. We hope you will join the dialogue.

Forum: Race, Society, and the Law

Racial injustice is one of America’s greatest disgraces. Acknowledging one’s own bigotry, and the institutionalized bigotry of our society, is uncomfortable, at best.  On Sunday, March 25 at 6pm, join Artists Rep in discussing how racial issues affect our society and the Portland community. The panel will be moderated by August Wilson Red Door Project co-founder Lesli Mones and include the Honorable Donald Letourneau, Lewis & Clark Law School professor John Parry, ACLU of Oregon board member Fred Neal, and The Skanner news editor Lisa Loving.

We hope that, together, we can shine a light on the anger, guilt, and shame of discrimination that lies beyond polite social convention.

Living Wage Jobs Town Hall

Senator Chip ShieldsSenator Chip Shields announces Daimler Trucks North America, UPS and Legacy Health Systems to join living wage jobs town hall this Friday, March 9.

He will join a growing list of businesses participating including Oregon Iron Works, New Seasons Market, Gunderson, SoloPower, Widmer Brothers and American Red Cross

Friday, March 9 from noon to 1:30 PM at
Vigor Industrial on Swan Island
(5555 N Channel Ave.)

State Senator Chip Shields (D-N/NE Portland) announced today that human resource recruiters from Daimler Trucks North America, UPS and Legacy Health Systems will join human resource recruiters from Oregon Iron Works, New Seasons Market, Gunderson and Vigor Industrial at the Friday, March 9th living wage jobs town hall. This event will be hosted by Sen. Shields and State Representatives Lew Frederick (HD 43, NE Portland) and Tina Kotek (HD 44, N/NE Portland).

“Oregon, like the rest of the country, is hurting, and unemployment is way too high. But there are companies in North and Northeast Portland who are hiring despite it all, and we are excited to be bringing a number of them to our next living wage jobs town hall to meet North and Northeast Portlanders looking for work,” said Shields.
