Coming up in King….

King NA holds a general meeting next Wednesday, April 9th, at 6:30 pm. We’ll be talking about changes to NA by-laws, hearing about the local Public Water Trust campaign (http://peopleswatertrust.org/), and checking in with our committees and spring event planning teams.

If you are joining us for our April meeting, you are invited to bring (dry) food donations for the Portland Food Project, helping to mitigate hunger in our city. We’ll meet at NECN, 4815 NE 7th Avenue.

Later this month, there will be a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the naming of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. If you are interested in doing some volunteer work to help – outreach to organizations in our neighborhood, primarily – email us at info@ kingneighborhood.org and we’ll put you in touch with the organizers.

Thursday, April 10th, community leaders are holding the first meeting of a discussion and working group on affordable housing. All residents of the area are invited to participate. The meeting will be held at NECN, 4815 NE 7th Avenue, at 6:30 pm. Email us for more info on the meeting.

Sunday, April 20th: Join us at our Tiny Tots Egg Hunt, in Two Plum Park! We kick things off for the littles ones – five yo and under – at 10:30 am. Eggs will be filled with nut-free candies.

We’ll be holding our neighborhood Clean-up on the 26th of April, Saturday, from about 10 am to 1 pm, in the Police Precinct’s parking lot. Bring us your junk and debris, and a small fee, and we’ll haul it away for you. More info to come.

Your voice is important: Join Metro for a community forum on the future of our transportation system

 

Metro is hosting a series of community discussions about the future of transportation investments.  Join us on April 3, at the Madison High School Library and meet with Metro councilors Sam Chase, Bob Stacey and Shirley Craddick.  This is your opportunity to meet with your councilors, give your input on regional plans, and help shape the future of the region.

Metro is seeking public comments through our survey site www.makeagreatplace.org from Thursday, March 27 through Monday, May 5.  You can also give more detailed feedback on the plans and programs that will shape our region for the next 25 years.

Open Forum on the May ballot measure concerning water/sewer management in Portland.

Please help us spread the word to let folks in your neighborhoods know that on Thursday, April 10th, from 7-9pm, the Buckman Community Association will host an open forum on the Ballot Measure that would remove from City Council management the Water and Sewer (BES) services.
The forum will be held in our regular meeting space, the Multnomah County Board Room, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Many Portlanders (ourselves included!) are relatively clueless about this measure and its potential impacts on water/sewer rates, but also the environment and related programs.
At the forum you will:
Find out about the measure from the initiative proponents..its purpose, what it creates and what we can expect. How it will aid ratepayers.
Hear from the opponents why this is a bad idea and how it could negatively affect the city, its residents and the environment.  How it will hurt ratepayers.
Get your questions answered.
The BCA remains neutral and is hosting the forum to create an opportunity for Portlanders to become informed about this serious proposal before the ballots arrive in April.
All are welcome!!  We especially invite those from other inner eastside Portland neighborhood to come.  Refreshments will be served at the break.

Bright Lights: Rethinking Urban Renewal

No city agency has been racked by more recent change than the Portland Development Commission. World renowned for its role in re-creating downtown and shaping new urban neighborhoods like the Pearl District, the agency turned from placemaking to economic development under Mayor Sam Adams during the Great Recession. And, ironically, as the economy has begun to boom, the PDC had to shrink, shedding dozens of jobs and institutional memory.

Now, under a new mayor, the PDC is shifting focus again with the most dramatic redrawing of the city’s urban renewal areas in over two decades.

Please join us for a conversation with the PDC’s executive director, Patrick Quinton, about the future of urban renewal in Portland. The event is free. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Bright Lights: Discussions on the Future of Portland is a monthly series presented by Portland Monthly magazine with City Club of Portland designed to bring the region’s thought leaders to the stage in an informal, conversational setting.
