Planned Parenthood of the Columbia Willamette’s new facility will celebrate it’s opening on February 14th. The organization has requested a street closure for the event on Garfield Avenue behind the building. As a result of the controversy over the availabilty of abortion services at Planned Parenthood, Bill Diss on behalf of Precious Children of Portland and Knights of Columbus is requesting to close Beech Street from Garfield to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. next to the building. Notification of the requests, as usual were sent to the neighborhood association for comment. If you would like KNA to give input to Portland Department of Transportation, we will accept comments at our Wednesday meeting or via info@kingneighborhood.org.
You know what I really wish we could do? is take a step back from yelling, waving signs, and other visceral statements and be able to have an enlightened discussion about what life means. The quality of life vs the quantity of life, about protecting babies and protecting women.
But experience has shown us this wont happen. We will end up seeing the groups as purely confrontational and if the point of the original block party was to celebrate, it will be lost in the confrontation.
Im all for freedom of expressions. But those freedoms butt up to each other. In this case I feel it would be better to let the Precious Children of Portland have a block party at some other time that is not done with the intent to alter the nature of the original event.
