Spanish Summer Camps and Adult Intensive Classes

Tierra Educational Center (TEC) at 2915 NE MLK Blvd (2nd floor of SCRAP’s building) has expanded to offer Spanish Summer Camps for children ages 4-11, in addition to the center’s wide range of adult, children, and family classes for Spanish learners of all ages and levels.

Summer is an excellent time to offer your child Spanish language education when their minds and bodies are alert and open to new ideas and activities. TEC Spanish Summer Camps provide small group, intensive exposure to the Spanish language and Latin American culture…all through the lens of play and music. Treat your child to a summer vacation abroad, without having to leave town!

Camps will be divided in two groups (5-10 students) of 4-6 year olds and 7-11 year olds and held Monday-Friday 9am-12pm July 25-29th and August 15-19th.

And for Mom and Dad, new morning Spanish Intensive courses for Beginner and Intermediate students will be offered July 12-August 11th. PDC Says: Come get your picnic table!

At some time in the recent past, someone has improved the vacant, Portland Development Commission lot at MLK/Alberta with a picnic table. Part of the stalled Vanport development, the grassy field has slowly been attracting use as a community space and park. Sara King of the PDC contacted KNA chair Alan Silver and asked us to get the word out that the table needs to go or they will take it away.

“Unfortunately, it cannot stay on the site and we hate to remove a very nice picnic table that might belong to someone. It is also possible that it was someone’s surplus table and is therefore up for grabs. Can you help us get the word out to the neighborhood that the picnic table will be removed by July 18th if it is not claimed?”

If it’s yours and you want to keep it, you have until Monday. If it’s yours and you don’t want it, it will soon be gone.

Volunteer for the King Graffiti Cleanup

On Saturday, July 23rd from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, King will hold its second collaborative graffiti cleanup.  This is a combined effort by City-contracted graffiti removal crews, and volunteers from King. Be a part of the solution!

There are two phases to the cleanup:

  1. Volunteers will survey their area and compile a list of sites that have been vandalized by graffiti and then submit the list to the Graffiti Abatement Coordinator at least a week ahead of the event.
  2. Contractor-crews will focus on paint-out or power-wash removals from private properties (provided we have signed owner-permission prior to the event). Volunteers will remove graffiti from properties “in the right-of-way”, including utility poles, dumpsters, newspaper boxes, and other sites that are not routinely cleaned by agencies or owners.

Previous years collaborative events have resulted in more than 1000 sites cleaned in a “season”.  Supplies will be provided by the Graffiti Abatement Program.  Volunteers must sign a volunteer agreement and application form, available at the Graffiti Program webpage: http://www.portlandonline.com/oni/index.cfm?c=32420

Volunteers can sign up for one or both phases.  Those who have already expressed interest in volunteering will be contacted this weekend to select an area to survey.  If you signed up and don’t hear from us by Sunday, contact trace.salmon@kingneighborhood.org.   There is only a week until the surveys need to be submitted.
