Two Bits:

• Screening of highlights from the documentary “Making Sense of Place – Portland: Quest for the Livable City” which documents the history of Portland’s experiment with land use planning. As part of this history, the film shines a light on one of the most fundamental challenges related to the success of our internationally-renowned planning approach:
How to revitalize communities without forcing out the people who have the greatest need for the benefits that revitalization brings?

• Discussion led by Kate Allen, Housing Policy Manager – Portland Housing Bureau; Dr. Lisa Bates, PSU College of Urban & Public Affairs; and Metro Councilor Robert Liberty to consider new ideas for how to tackle this issue.

Some Bites: Hosted Hors D’oeuvres (No- Host Bar)

(Gift) Bags: Yes….On top of a great program and Hors D’oeuvres….you will walk away with your own “Schwag Bag”. Each attendee will receive a Lincoln Institute tote bag, the “Making Sense of Place – Portland: Quest for the Livable City” DVD and a copy of CLF’s hallmark publication, the Regional Equity Atlas.

The evening is sponsored by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. “Portland: Quest for the Livable City” is the third film in the Lincoln Institute series titled Making Sense of Place, which examines the complex questions of urban planning and regional identity by exploring ways in which people participate in and experience their cities.

Education Summit to Address Excellence, Equity

The 2010 Education Summit announced both national and regional keynote speakers for the first annual event: Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Education, Greg Darnieder, and 2008 National Teacher of the Year Michael Geisen. The announcement follows a year-long, regional effort led by Mayor Adams and former County Chair Ted Wheeler to create a vehicle for ongoing discussion about education in the Portland region.

Education is vital to our goal of becoming the most sustainable city in the world. The only way we will achieve this goal is through partnership and collaboration. We want Portland to be known not just as the ‘greenest’ city in America, but the most educated.

The Summit will take shape in two formats, a Town Hall dialogue on April 10th and a Leadership Summit on April 12th. The Town Hall serves to engage the community in a meaningful conversation about how we as a community can ensure all students have access to resources that help them graduate high school on time and go on to post-secondary education. Resources for youth and families will be available as well as snacks and child care.

“We cannot call our schools excellent until there is excellence for every student,” said Dan Ryan, CEO of the Portland Schools Foundation. “The issue of equity in our schools needs Portland’s best thinking and the summit is an opportunity to re-focus our attention on equity and excellence for all students–our kids deserve that.”

The Leadership Summit aims to build on the existing work of the Education Cabinet, bringing together top minds in education, including elected officials, school district leaders and business leaders for the opportunity to dig into compelling data about how our community is supporting young people and where we are falling short. This is a time to share and commit to collective action toward securing a more promising future for our youth.

“We must do all that we can to improve the high school graduation rate to ensure the future workforce is qualified for careers in our local economy, said Worksystems Inc. Executive Director Andrew McGough. “The whole region has a stake in this and the Education Summit will provide an important opportunity for thought leaders to look closely at this issue.”

King Spring Clean-Up April 24th

King’s Spring Clean-Up will be April 24th this year at it’s usual location behind the police precinct at 449 NE Emerson. The Clean-up will run from 9 am to 1pm. The fees will be $5 per carload and $10 per truckload. Volunteers get to dump a load for free! You will be able to dump household junk, scrap metal, building materials, old furniture. NOT ACCEPTED: kitchen garbage, yard debris, hazardous waste. There will be recycling for scrap metal and electronics.

Art Hop Call for Artists and Vendors

On Saturday, May 15, 2010 from 11am to 6pm, Art on Alberta will hold its 11th Annual Art Hop with the theme, “ABC: Art Builds Community.” Over 15 blocks of NE Alberta Street will be closed to car traffic to accommodate over 150 artists, craftspeople, music, dance and theater performances, interactive art events along with food and other vendors. This is a free arts event for kids of all ages.

This year, Art Hop accomplishes a major murals project on NE Alberta Street. Three murals will be painted by area youth groups including House of Umoja, Girls Inc. and the George School under the direction of Skidmore Prize winner Rodolpho Serna. A fourth mural will be painted by the attending public on the day of Art Hop, designed and supervised by Esteban Camacho. Art on Alberta has been facilitating these murals as a gift to two other nonprofits who serve this neighborhood: Sabin CDC and Community Energy Project. Art on Alberta is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the Alberta Art District’s distinct identity through art and educational activities.
