On Saturday, May 15, 2010 from 11am to 6pm, Art on Alberta will hold its 11th Annual Art Hop with the theme, “ABC: Art Builds Community.” Over 15 blocks of NE Alberta Street will be closed to car traffic to accommodate over 150 artists, craftspeople, music, dance and theater performances, interactive art events along with food and other vendors. This is a free arts event for kids of all ages.

Registration for artists, craftspeople, music, dance and theater performers, interactive art events, food and other vendors is open. For information about registering your vending space, please contact Combustible Media, 503-235-5025 or carrie.locke@combustiblemedia.com.

This year, Art Hop accomplishes a major murals project on NE Alberta Street. Three murals will be painted by area youth groups including House of Umoja, Girls Inc. and the George School under the direction of Skidmore Prize winner Rodolpho Serna. A fourth mural will be painted by the attending public on the day of Art Hop, designed and supervised by Esteban Camacho. Art on Alberta has been facilitating these murals as a gift to two other nonprofits who serve this neighborhood: Sabin CDC and Community Energy Project. Art on Alberta is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the Alberta Art District’s distinct identity through art and educational activities. NE Family Cooperative Community Seeks Board Members

The NE Family Cooperative Community is seeking Board members. They hope to develop a diverse Board of Directors with skill sets or experience that includes finance, legal, nonprofits, co-ops, and family services. The Board of Directors will assist the organization with capacity building and becoming an independent nonprofit organization. They are currently a sponsored project of the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods. The Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation, is dedicated to the livability of our twelve inner North and Northeast neighborhoods.
The Northeast Family Cooperative Community was founded with the belief that families can join together to share goods, resources, talents, and skills in order to create a more enjoyable and sustainable lifestyle for members; environmentally, financially, socially, and emotionally. They operate the Swap and Play Cafe where members can develop community with other local families, as well as, swap their children’s gently used books, clothing and toys.
Interested individuals should send a letter of interest to nefamilycoop@gmail.com.

Youth Demand Central Communication Hub: Community Responds

Northeast Coalition evolves existing Hotline

Every day, at least 8 million children are left alone and unsupervised once the school bell rings. While 9 out of 10 Americans think that all youth should have access to after-school programs, two-thirds say it is difficult to find programs…even locally (according to the National Youth Violence Office).

This is true for Northeast Portland youth, who voiced a need and a concern at a recent Youth Engagement Workshop sponsored by the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods and League of Women Voters of Portland. During the discussion following a panel of community leaders, youth asked how to find out about all of the issues and opportunities to get involved. It was clear that youth want to be engaged and need the channels to do so. Youth participant, Deyalo Bennette, shares that “This is another step for our community to take the lead in responding to our own needs. It is a symbol of positive change. I am inspired to be the lead youth organizer for the Hotline.”

“I didn’t have this growing up and didn’t know there could be more to my life than basketball until I graduated college. The Hotline is helpful for youth to know resources to develop personal skills and interests. Today’s youth are primed to learn and explore. If they don’t have an outlet for this creativity or interest, then they turn to the streets,” explains Imani Muhammad, Hotline Project Coordinator, “For the average youth who are not enrolled in programs that provide afterschool programming, the number one question is where do I go and how do I find out about opportunities for youth. Youth today are ready to lead and want to be prepared,” she continues.
