Special KNA Meeting, Canvassing Kick-off 5/21

King Neighborhood Association Special Board Meeting
Reflections Coffeeshop, 446 NE Killingsworth Street
May 21, 2011 – 10:00-11:00 am

Due to a lack of time, some KNA business went unresolved at our last meeting. In order to both clean house and to take care of our neighborhood canvass, we will meet at Reflections. If you are interested in the topics on the agenda or would like to volunteer to canvass part of our neighborhood that day, stop on by! We will go out with information about our association and our upcoming events–primarily the King Neighborhood Clean-Up and the King Garage Sale Day.

If you would like to canvass, you can cover just your block or as many as you wish. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and to broaden KNA’s participation base so that we can best serve everyone in our little patch of Portland.

King School Students Work on History/Gardening Project

Second and third grade students from the King School SUN afterschool program are participating in a partnership with the Emerson Street Garden to learn gardening while working with neighborhood elders to help transform a vacant neighborhood lot into a community asset.

Sixth through eighth graders are partnering with artist Joe Sneed and students from da Vinci Middle school in a five day-a-week class on N/NE History, Art and Culture. They are collecting stories of local neighborhood history from local residents and incorporating these stories into a design for an archway entrance to the garden.

Eight grade students in the King School Technology and Design course will be working with engineers from the Portland Water Bureau to develop a learning center to be built at the garden to be used for educational opportunities and workshops into the future. The Technology and Design course is part of the International Baccalaureate program at King School.

If you would like to get involved contact Joe Sneed at joe.b.sneed@gmail.com or call 503.995.2632

Get in on the Garage Sale–June 11th

King will be organizing our first-annual, neighborhood-wide garage sale day on June 11th. By having your own garage sale on that day with your neighbors, we will pool our advertising and get more traffic! Shoppers will be able to navigate using our online map and see details provided by the sellers. Registration is only $5 and will get you on the map as well as a classy yard sign to mark your spot. To register, print the form at: http://kingneighborhood.org/gsalereg.pdf and send it in with a check to us at the address listed. I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in your basement!
