Local Leaders Institute This Weekend

Are you interested in learning about the history of Portland from local leaders and understanding why it is relevant today? How do you get more participation from your group?

Join the dynamic Local Leaders Institute this Friday, Nov 12 from 5-8pm and Saturday, Nov 13 from 10am-3pm in NE Portland. http://bit.ly/LocalLeadersInstitute

Come out Friday evening and hear from local and national representatives from Portland, Oregon. Spend an evening and dinner with former Senator Margaret Carter, former City Commissioner candidate Betty Harris and Vancouver Avenue Baptist Pastor J.W. Hennessee. The topics will cover the history of the Neighborhood System and its initial purpose and role in local government and in the community; the local history of Portland and the changes to culture, environment and demographics; and how to become a motivated leader in your community. Each presenter will speak, followed by a question and answer session. The amount of rich history and energy present for this session will be fantastic!

What Style Is my House?

Y’all come! General Meeting of the Sabin Community Association celebrating Sabin’s homes and history:

What Style Is my House? All NECN neighborhoods invited!!

When: October 18th, 2010.
Where: Sabin Elementary School Auditorium, 4013 NE 18th Avenue, Portland 97212.

6-7pm: Social hour.

Special exhibit of Sabin’s rich history of diversity and community service from the archives of Betty Walker; refreshments; Architectural Heritage Center table, with experts on weatherizing your home, researching your house, and more; excellent handouts.

7-8: Special presentation on Sabin architecture:

7-7:30: What Style Is my House? by Bosco-Milligan Foundation/Architectural Heritage Center board member Robert Jordan, as he surveys house styles common to the Portland area and the northwest. If you’ve ever wondered what style to call your home, you will find the answer in this perfect program.

7:30-8 pm: Sabin historian William Youngren presents particular houses representative of the great integrity of Sabin design.

8 pm:. Sabin business meeting.

Tonight’s timely program encourages residents to explore Sabin’s more modest but equally precious architectural heritage in light of the recent application for the Irvington Historic District. Our wonderful community builds its bright future in the context of an illustrious past that is the focus of this evening to which you are all most cordially invited.

We warmly invite our neighbors from the Alameda, Boise, Concordia, Eliot, Grant Park, Humboldt, Irvington, King, Sullivan’s Gulch, Vernon, and Woodlawn neighborhoods to join us for the social hour and the presentations. Much of what will be said is equally applicable to your fine communities. Y’all come!

Feedback Needed to Shape Future Urban Renewal

A community-based public forum series is being held to educate and engage community members regarding pending decisions about significant Urban Renewal Area (URA) investments that will change the built environment of inner North and Northeast neighborhoods. Inspired by neighbors for neighbors, these forums are an opportunity for local residents to learn about and share their views on the history of local Urban Renewal Areas, become aware of current options being considered for the future of the URAs, and speak to the types of investment they would like to see in their community. The first event of the series begins February 10th with a “Community Truth-Telling” Town Hall. Community feedback from the series will be presented to the Portland Development Commission’s North/Northeast Economic Development Initiative Community Advisory Committee on March 24th. This series of four events is sponsored by the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, The Urban League of Portland, and the Portland State University Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning. This project was made possible in part by a grant from Oregon Humanities (OH), a statewide nonprofit organization and an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which funds OH’s grant program.

Urban Renewal Area Town Hall 1: Community Truth-Telling
Wednesday, February 10, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Panelists will share perspectives on how inner North/Northeast Urban Renewal Areas have historically impacted neighborhoods. Attendees will also be invited to share their own views on the history of Urban Renewal Areas.

Urban Renewal Area Community Forum and Planning Sessions (Two). Both sessions will be the same.

Session One: Saturday, February 20th, 10am – 2pm
Session Two: Tuesday, February 23rd, 6pm – 9pm

Learn the nuts and bolts of Urban Renewal Areas and the choices for the future of the Interstate Corridor and Oregon Convention Center URAs. Participate in work sessions to provide input into the future of the URAs and economic development in inner North and Northeast Portland.

Thursday, March 11th, 6:30pm – 8:30pm
