King NA Supports Juneteenth Forward at MLK/Alberta

At the May meeting of the association, Woody Broadnax, the organizer of one of the two Juneteenth events in Portland this year, asked for KNA support. This will be the first year for the Juneteenth Forward event and it will be held where the longstanding Juneteenth event was last year. That older event will take place at Jefferson High School this year. Mr. Broadnax asked for KNA support for his use of the PDC owned lot for the event and sought an unspecified financial contribution.

At its special board meeting at Reflections Coffee on May 21st, the KNA board voted to write a letter of support to the Portland Development Commission for the use of the location. KNA, which has yet to develop an income stream other than a $1000/year outreach stipend, declined to provide any financing to the event.

King School Students Work on History/Gardening Project

Second and third grade students from the King School SUN afterschool program are participating in a partnership with the Emerson Street Garden to learn gardening while working with neighborhood elders to help transform a vacant neighborhood lot into a community asset.

Sixth through eighth graders are partnering with artist Joe Sneed and students from da Vinci Middle school in a five day-a-week class on N/NE History, Art and Culture. They are collecting stories of local neighborhood history from local residents and incorporating these stories into a design for an archway entrance to the garden.

Eight grade students in the King School Technology and Design course will be working with engineers from the Portland Water Bureau to develop a learning center to be built at the garden to be used for educational opportunities and workshops into the future. The Technology and Design course is part of the International Baccalaureate program at King School.

N/NE History & Storytelling

A remarkable group of individuals have come together over two meetings at Reflections Coffee and Talking Drum Bookstore to plan an inter-generational exchange between community elders and King School students. Students in the Schools Uniting Neighborhoods program on Tuesdays and Thursdays over the next 5 weeks will learn from community members about their experiences growing food, living in N/NE, neighborhood changes overtime, and what it means to have a community garden in King Neighborhood today.

Students will be taking the stories and lessons they learn and creating art that will then go at the Emerson Garden site.

FoLT to Hold Open Meeting at Kennedy School

Friends of Last Thursday will convene a meeting of its various subcommittees and Steering Committee this Thursday, April 21st beginning at 6:00 pm. The Kennedy School Community Room will be the venue. Participation is open to all. FoLT is seeking volunteers to fill out its many open committee assignments.

Also: So far we have over 60 people of all ages signed up to help with the Alberta Street clean up from 10-2 PM on Saturday April 23rd but there is still room for more! All of the details and the pre-registration form are on our website http://www.albertamainst.org/whats-happening/. In addition to the clean up, we’ll be having lunch by the Burgers or Bust Cafe, the debut of the Art on Alberta Mobile Gallery, now known as Red Rover, the 1st annual Golden Garbage Awards and the raffia cutting ceremony in front of our garbage can prototype! It’s going to be a great day and hopefully make a dent in the garbage and graffiti on Alberta Street.
