JOIN US FOR A UNIQUE COMMUNITY FORUM!!

Help identify the skills and abilities community members want in Portland’s mayoral and city council candidates

Portland voters deserve to know whether mayoral and city council candidates have the skills, temperament, and wisdom to serve our community effectively if we elect them.

Join other Portlanders for a unique community forum in which community members will share their experiences working with city council members and use this information to identify the skills and abilities we want and need in our elected city leaders.

A wide range of community and neighborhood organizations have joined together to sponsor this forum. The forum co-sponsors will use the input from the forum to develop a list of desired skills and sample questions community organizations and individual voters can use to help them evaluate mayoral and city council candidates.

The NECN Community Economic Development Council’s Inaugural Speaker Series Event
Curious Comedy, 5225 NE MLK Blvd, Portland, OR 97211

*FREE*

The Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods (NECN) invites the community to a panel discussion and Q & A about the history of economic development in inner N/NE Portland with an eye cast toward discovering future economic development opportunities. The panel will feature:

  • Carl Talton – Past Co-Chair of the N/NE Economic Development Alliance
  • Dr. Karen Gibson – PSU Associate Professor, Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning
  • Paul Knauls Sr – Owner, Geneva’s Shear Perfection Barber and Beauty Salon

Join us to hear three different perspectives on past economic development activities, their impacts and key learnings for our future. Carl Talton, a community leader with years of experience, will share his perspectives from work with city agencies such as the Portland Development Commission and leadership at the North/Northeast Economic Development Alliance with Sheila Holden. Author of Bleeding Albina, Dr. Karen Gibson will share an academic perspective as a researcher of the political economy of neighborhood change in Portland’s historic black community, the Albina District. A community leader, Paul Knauls Sr., will bring his first person account as a business owner experiencing the impacts of various business and economic development programs throughout the years.

Each speaker brings a unique perspective on community economic development and has strong connections with Portland’s historic inner N/NE neighborhoods and communities including the African-American community. This first event of a series is a must for newcomers and longtime community members alike.

Chat with Lew Frederick

From Lew Frederick:

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Second Saturday Chat, May 14th

Our monthly Second Saturday get-together is coming up next week. We meet from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Reflections Coffee Shop/Talking Drum Bookstore, 446 NE Killingsworth (just east of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.)

Thanks again to Gloria for letting us, and other community groups, use this space. Please show her some love by buying some coffee and goodies while you’re there.

Important bills and issues continue to be debated and voted on in the Legislature. Next week we’ll see the May revenue forecast and work on the budget will intensify. Let’s talk about it. Hope to see you there.

There’s an election going on!

Please don’t forget to return your ballot by May 17th. There are two local tax measures on the ballot to support Portland schools. I support both of them. Important elections are also under way for School Board, Community College Board and Education Service District Board.

I believe that it is vital to reverse the disinvestment in education that has taken place over the past twenty years, because I simply refuse to give up on our future. Please vote YES on Measure #26-121, the Portland School Bond, and Measure 26-122, the Portland School Levy.
