Road Safety Action Plan Meeting Tonight

Vision Zero wants to remind you about the second and final stakeholder and public meeting this Wednesday, April 20, from 5:30-7pm at the OAME offices (4134 N. Vancouver Avenue, Portland).

They will be continuing work on the King, Humboldt, Boise Road Safety Action Plan and need YOUR input and feedback. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. Please see their website for more information.

SALT Committee to Discuss FoLT Agreement

The new community leadership organization (Friends of Last Thursday, or FoLT) which seeks to lead the planning of Last Thursday with city mentorship is seeking community members to serve on its steering committee. Last week FoLT distributed an agreement for prospective members to sign indicating that they are supporters of the event and will work to keep it going without additional regulation. A number of community members have expressed concerns that the bar for participating with FoLT in an oversight role as laid out in the agreement is too high.

The FoLT steering committee is apparently down to six members at present, after two of them, Bill Leissner and Jeanne Giles, were removed due to their refusal to sign the agreement. Mr. Leissner said in an email that he and Jeanne were the most outspoken members concerning neighborhood impacts and that he understands that the Community Impact Committee has been eliminated. There will be a discussion of Last Thursday issues at the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods’ SALT (Safety and Livability Team) meeting tonight, Monday April 18th, 6:30 pm at NECN, 4815 NE 7th avenue.

More Changes on N. Williams, Open House April 16th

Come take a look at potential N. Williams transportation improvements – to the bike lane, auto lanes, bus stops and crosswalks – on Saturday, April 16th, from 1:30 – 4:00 pm, 2910 N Williams Ave. The City wants to know which changes will and won’t work for you.

This will be a drop-in open house meeting, with:

  • Real live traffic engineers
  • Big colorful maps and drawings
  • Snacks
  • Childcare and playground
  • Handouts and feedback forms to take for others who can’t attend

The City of Portland wants to make N Williams a safer and more comfortable place to bike, drive, ride transit and walk. With the advice of a Stakeholder Advisory Committee formed for this project, City staff have prepared some alternative designs for your consideration. Come take a look and tell us what you think.
The current traffic operations/bikeway project is just the most recent change for the North Williams corridor in inner North Portland. This project builds on the work done beginning in 2006 as part of the Vancouver-Williams Transportation Project that recommended pedestrian safety improvements (many of which have since been constructed with funding from the Portland Development Commission).

Historically, this area includes one of Portland’s oldest commercial districts and was a main street for Portland’s African-American community. With its distinguished history, emerging bicycle-oriented business community and more than 3,000 bicycle riders every day, the North Williams Bikeway project area has many stakeholders who should be involved in discussions about the future cross-section of the street. A Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) has been formed and met for the first time on February 1, 2011.

Vision Zero action plan to target neighborhood danger spots.

The Stakeholder Advisory Committee (StAC) for Vision Zero Oregon’s King/Humboldt/Boise’s Roadway Safety Action Plan will begin looking at neighborhood road problems. These problems were collected through stakeholder interviews, a public survey, and a March 2011 community walking tour. The Vision Zero project will use the perspectives and expertise from the StAC to make a plan to increase road safety in the King, Humboldt, and Boise neighborhoods. This project will look at ways to reach “Vision Zero;” a vision of roads that don’t have any deaths or injuries for people walking, biking, or driving.

Both StAC meetings are open to the general public. Pizza and refreshments will be provided.

Vision Zero Traffic Safety Meeting

Please join us for our first Stakeholder Advisory Committee meeting on March 23.

We are inviting anyone and everyone to join us in identifying safety hazards in the King, Boise, and Humboldt neighborhoods and work towards developing a range of solutions that citizens can pursue. During the meeting we’ll briefly introduce the project and summarize our current findings in the neighborhood. After that we’ll break into small group with you the public to discuss more specific unsafe locations and behaviors.

When: Wednesday, March 23 – 5:30pm – 7:00pm

Where: Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs (Amelia Room, 4134 N. Vancouver Avenue)

Details: Please arrive by 5:30 to promptly get started. We’ll provide delicious refreshments.
