Friends of Last Thursday Seek Community Input

Friends of Last Thursday, the organization tasked with taking responsibility for the administration of the monthly street festival, is seeking feedback from the communities surrounding Alberta and the Last Thursday participants. This is your opportunity to explain what is good about LT and what needs to change.

From FoLT:

Friends of Last Thursday (FoLT) is on the move! Tasked by the city to localize stewardship of Last Thursday within the Alberta community, FoLT began hands on engagement during May Last Thursday to extremely positive result. Infractions were down, the street was reopened in record time and the FoLT Ambassador program made great progress in its education and outreach component. One of the cornerstones of the FoLT mission is to help create a safer event, which means working with participants to gain their compliance with city and county safety laws, including observance of ADA, parking, noise, fire and food handling codes, zero tolerance for open containers, and a Leave No Trace refuse goal. Also of high priority is engendering greater neighborhood respect. FoLT has listened to the concerns of our neighbors and is actively working to educate Last Thursday participants in the ways in which they can exert the lightest possible impact on our community.

PDC Says: Come get your picnic table!

At some time in the recent past, someone has improved the vacant, Portland Development Commission lot at MLK/Alberta with a picnic table. Part of the stalled Vanport development, the grassy field has slowly been attracting use as a community space and park. Sara King of the PDC contacted KNA chair Alan Silver and asked us to get the word out that the table needs to go or they will take it away.

“Unfortunately, it cannot stay on the site and we hate to remove a very nice picnic table that might belong to someone. It is also possible that it was someone’s surplus table and is therefore up for grabs. Can you help us get the word out to the neighborhood that the picnic table will be removed by July 18th if it is not claimed?”

If it’s yours and you want to keep it, you have until Monday. If it’s yours and you don’t want it, it will soon be gone.

Second City Alums at Curious Comedy

From Curious Comedy Theater:

We are thrilled to have Stephnie Weir (MadTV) and her amazing husband, Bob Dassie, at Curious this weekend bringing their improvised show WeirDass to Portland for the very first time, this Friday and Saturday.

Both Second City veterans, Stephnie and Bob are my improv heroes and true improv masters. Their shows are always hilarious – full of strong characters woven into a surprising story that will make you wonder how they could possibly make it all up on the spot. But they do.

Former CEO Donates Computer Lab to King School

New at King School is the Sam K. Duncan International Media Lab. Today saw its dedication with a visit from the former OfficeMax CEO.

In line with the school’s transformation to an International Baccalaureate program, the state of the art equipment will allow King students to research and collaborate with students of other IB schools around the world. After the official ribbon cutting, there was an all-school assembly, treats, and then classes took turns trying out the new space and equipment on this last day of school. As part of a grant from the Oregon State Department of Education, first year King Principal Patterson plans to hire a technology instructor to get maximum utility from the new asset.

Mr. Duncan wanted to help a school in need and King School seemed a fitting recipient since Dr. King was a great inspirational figure to him growing up in Arkansas. He is now retired after working his way up through the world of retail at ShopKO and Fred Meyer, starting as a clerk in an Albertson’s store.
