Alberta Cleans Up on Earth Day

Alberta Main Street is organizing a way for you to help the Alberta business district on Earth Day. It’s the Alberta Street Clean Up! Go to their website and pre-registration form. Check out their facebook event page. People can just show up on the day of but since lunch is being provided (thanks to Burgers or Bust Cafe) and some other special treats, they would like some idea of how many people to expect.

The clean up starts at 10:00 am on Saturday April 23 (Meet at Alberta Central Plaza between Barista & Umpqua Bank) and will end with lunch and a celebration where they hope to unveil the prototype of new Alberta Street garbage cans and debut the Art on Alberta mobile Art Gallery.

Hands On Portland Offers Updated Volunteering System

Hands On Portland has upgraded their website to a new system that will make it easier for you to connect to well-organized, meaningful volunteer opportunities that match your schedule and interests.

This new site represents the next evolution in online social engagement. Built on a dynamic platform, it will make your online experience with them more productive, fun and engaging. As it first goes live, they anticipate some bugs and usability issues typical of new websites. Please know that they will be working diligently to address issues as they arise.

Ultimately, the new Hands On website will give you more control in finding the information that’s important to you through a sophisticated search function. You will have an increased ability to find opportunities that match your schedule and interests. You can create volunteer teams for your friends, family, co-workers, fellow students or club members and more. You can also manage your projects, track your volunteer history and share your stories.

If you are a current volunteer with Hands On Greater Portland, you already have an account in the new system under the same username you had before (your email address). You will have to create a new password using the “forgot password” link. If you don’t have an account yet, go to the registration page. After signing in, you will be asked to list your skills and interests to best match you with volunteer opportunities.

Hands On Portland hopes that you enjoy the new features of their website. If you have any questions or concerns, please check out their FAQ page. If you don’t find your answer there, feel free to contact them at info@handsonportland.org.

Graffiti Cleanup in King?

The City of Portland Graffiti Abatement program will sponsor eight (8) Saturday morning graffiti cleanups between March and October 2011. Interested neighborhoods/business associations should contact Graffiti Abatement Coordinator as soon as possible to be considered as a cleanup site.

Beginning in March, the cleanups will be held one Saturday each month from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and will be a combined effort by City-contracted graffiti removal crews, and a minimum of 10 volunteers from the community. Be a part of the solution! Prior to the cleanup date, residents/businesses will be asked to survey their area and compile a list of sites that have been vandalized by graffiti and then to submit the list to Graffiti Abatement Coordinator at least a week ahead of the event.

The contractor-crews will focus on paint-out or power-wash removals from private properties (provided we have signed owner-permission prior to the event). Volunteers will remove graffiti from properties “in the right-of-way”, including utility poles, dumpsters, newspaper boxes, and other sites that are not routinely cleaned by agencies or owners.
Supplies will be provided by the Graffiti Abatement Program.

To participate, King will need to apply for one of 8 dates and have the minimum of 10 volunteers willing to do the removal and survey. The dates are from late March through October. If you are interested in seeing this happen in King this year, send us your information at info@kingneighborhood.org or come to our next meeting at 6:30 pm March 9th, at 4815 NE 7th.
