U of P Lecture on Citizen Engagement

Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer, founder and president of AmericaSpeaks, will give a talk at the University of Portland at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10. The lecture will take place in Buckley Center Auditorium on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd., and is free and open to the public.

AmericaSpeaks – a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization – has worked to provide citizens with a greater voice in the policy making process and develop new institutions that can strengthen our democracy. This lecture is an excellent opportunity for all community members interested in learning from one of the nation’s leading experts on citizens engaging with government.

Lukensmeyer was Chief of Staff to Governor Dick Celeste of Ohio from 1986 to 1991. She was also Consultant to the White House Chief of Staff for nine months during the Clinton administration.

Sherman: A Jazz Opera (see attached poster) is loosely based on the life of saxophone player Sherman Thomas, who died tragically in the ’70s. But it also celebrates the legacy of post-war North Williams Avenue when it was known as “Black Broadway,” because live jazz by black musicians and singers from around the country – including Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Billy Holiday – was being played night and day in a least 10 clubs along the entertainment strip and in other parts of the city. The Board’s Ad Hoc Committee on Student Assignment, Program Initiation and Reconfigurations scheduled to meet Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Auditorium:

1. Public Hearing to Receive Citizen Comment on the Proposed Enrollment Options

2. Alameda-Sabin-Beaumont Recommended Enrollment Options
