Lunch Box Event for Kids at King Farmers Market

Portland’s Grace Kuto, philanthropic author, renowned cook, and passionate educator, will help host the “Local Lunch Box,” an educational event filled with activities intended to encourage kids to make healthy, seasonal, local food choices. Kuto will do a cooking demonstration at noon and be on hand to sell and sign her cookbook, Harambee.
School-aged participants can take part in a market scavenger hunt to learn more about good versus bad food choices, learn about a day in the life of a farmer and experience fresh and/or new fruits and veggies. Other planned activities include a drop-in cooking class for children of all ages, nutrition bingo, make-your-own lunch box, and a blind box produce game where children can identify fruits and veggies based on touch and smell.

Can Last Thursday Be Saved from Itself?

What do you think about Last Thursday?

The Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods is canvassing neighborhoods along Alberta and soliciting input from neighbors affected by Last Thursday. As the impact grows each year, now over 10,000 attendees on summer months, any benefit to the local economy needs to be weighed against the noise, litter, parking issues and public drunkeness. Is this an event that the neighborhoods want? Should Last Thursday continue to be regulated differently than other large events in the city? Are there ways to improve Last Thursday? The City of Portland wants to know.

Safeway to Present Remodel Plans at KNA Meeting

Due to concerns expressed by King residents that the King Safeway remodel will fall short of community expectations and City landscaping code, Safeway representatives plan to attend Wednesday’s meeting to explain the proposal. Interested parties are encouraged to provide input that may be included in KNA’s comments to the Bureau of Planning and Sustainabilty.

Safeway to Remodel King Store

An interior remodel of the Safeway at Ainsworth and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd is planned and permitting is underway. As a requirement of the permit, upgrades to the landscaping around the store and in the parking lot are required. While intending to upgrade the plantings, replace missing trees, and install a low wall along Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Safeway is applying for a variance to avoid increasing the planted areas and reducing parking. To maintain the existing number of spaces, Safeway wants the landscaping requirement reduced from 4,455 sq. ft to 1,800.
