Scholarships available for children with either musical talent or financial need

Pfeifer MusicWerks Studio in NE Portland is now accepting applications for music lesson scholarships for new students. Scholarships are available for piano, voice, guitar, violin, viola, cello, string bass, composition, or percussion.

Scholarships are available to students in the Portland metro area based on talent or financial need. There are four scholarships for financial need and two for talent. Application deadline for all scholarships is December 5, 2009, and talent auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, December 14 and 15, 2009.

Barnes and Noble Bookfair for King School

books-pileThe King School Bookfair fundraiser is coming the Saturday after Thanksgiving at the Lloyd Center Barnes and Noble store. All purchases by King School supporters from noon to 5pm will benefit King School. The choir will perform, students will read their stories, and there will be activities for the kids! There will be lists of books that can be purchased for classrooms at King School.

Future of Covered Structure in King School Park to be Determined

kingschoolparkPeggy Glascock of the Parks Bureau will present plans regarding the deteriorating structure at King School Park at our next meeting. Other possible topics of conversation could include: maintenance issues at the park, how the long term plan can better serve the needs of residents and farmer’s market attendees, and how the school district’s desire for a covered play area influences the decision making process of the parks bureau.

Columbia River Crossing Forum

CRCOn Saturday, November 21st NECN will be hosting a Columbia River Crossing Impact Forum. We hope that each neighborhood can send at least 1 or 2 representatives, however all are welcome! We will hear from three students of the Sustainability Clinic at Willamette University College of Law about their research into the impacts the Columbia River Crossing project will have on the east side of Portland and the region as a whole. They will share research on health and environmental impacts as well as the laws that govern the project and how the process for the project moves forward.

During the forum we will also hear from Jeri Williams from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement (and former Executive Director of the Environmental Justice Action Group), on her involvement and advocacy on the various stages of this bridge expansion project. She can provide personal insights into how to get involved and what has worked and what has not.

Finally, we will have short, small group discussions to gain feedback from all of you on your concerns and suggestions for how we can all work to make sure that east side residents are best served by this project.
