PPS Students to Operate Waffle Cart on Alberta

News from Portland Public Schools:

Students helped design and will help manage Solar Waffle Works, a new food cart located at N.E. Alberta St. and 23rd Ave.
A new solar-powered food cart in northeast Portland serves up more than waffles.

Located at N.E. Alberta St. and 23rd Ave. and set to open this month, the small blue trailer housing “Solar Waffle Works” is a nonprofit project that helps high school graduates gain independent living skills and vocational training.

Bobby Fouther to Receive Spirit of Portland Award

Bobby FoutherBobby Fouther, dance instructor, artist, member of the Oregon Ballet Theatre outreach staff, and tireless King School supporter and volunteer has been selected to receive the “Independent Spirit Award” for his work in the community. I hope you can attend the ceremony and celebrate. Admission is free to all.

25 winners will be receiving the coveted 2009 Spirit of Portland Award during an evening ceremony at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 starting at 7 p.m. The group of winners includes those chosen in various categories by the Selection Committee last week and those selected by Council members to receive the newly created Commissioner’s Award.

The Award Ceremony will be held in the Newmark Theatre, one of the PCPA’s three theatres. A reception with cake and beverages in the spacious lobby downstairs will follow. The Newmark Theatre is located inside Antoinette Hatfield Hall, 1111 SW Broadway at the Main Street intersection in downtown Portland.

What: FREE Orientation to the new SmartAccess™ Center: overview and goals of SmartAccess™ workshops, the history and mission of Portland Community Media, the role that community media plays in civic life and community engagement through civic media, advocacy and storytelling. It’s also a celebration of this new and exciting partnership!

When: Tuesday, October 27th 6:30-8:30 pm. This orientation is required and a prerequisite to participate in any of the workshops below offered at CNN.

DIY Video covers how to effectively use your camcorder or Flip video camera to produce the best possible results. Selected topics covered will include affordable lighting options, consumer grade cameras, inexpensive microphones, and low-cost or free editing software! [Participants need to bring their own camcorder/camera to this interactive workshop.]

Social Networking: Using Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn
This workshop is an introduction to using the internet and new media tools to effectively communicate on the web. Participants will be able to set up an online social networking account, using tools such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn to share information about their group, cause or organization. [Participants need to have basic keyboard skills and an email address to sign on to services.]

Social Media: Getting Your Videos on the Web
This introductory workshop will help you learn how to upload videos from your camera or other source onto web sites, such as YouTube™ or blip.tv. Participants will learn tips and tricks for shooting, editing, compressing and uploading to the web and how to effectively use the net to increase views and networking opportunities. [Participants should bring a QuickTime clip less than five minutes long that they would like to upload or a sample video can be provided.]

Elevated Coffee Seeks Wine and Beer License

Elevated Coffee in the Vanport Square development at 5261 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, has applied for a beer and wine license to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. The license would allow on-premise sales of malt beverages not more than 14%, wine not more than 21% and cider not more than 10% alcohol. They propose to operate from M-Th, 6am-7pm, F 6am-9pm, and Sat-Sun 7am-9pm and have live and recorded music. Any objections to the application should be directed to the OLCC at 9079 SE McLoughlin Blvd, Portland OR 97222. The license investigator is Charles Ellis, 503-872-5210.
