This forum is going to be of more significance than the forum that was held at Cleveland High School last Tuesday because of the new information that Chromium-6 (which is associated more strongly with cancer risk) was identified as a substance used at both businesses in the hot spots – in addition to arsenic and cadmium.
The early portion of the evening will be used for an “open house” where people can interact directly with agency representatives stationed at tables, and the majority of the meeting (starting later) will be used for Q&A for the entire audience.

Woodlawn-King Sewer Project by Sibohan O’Leary, City Environmental Services Community Outreach
City of Portland Environmental Services is designing three large-scale sewer projects in North and Northeast Portland neighborhoods to replace or repair approximately 91,000 feet of public sewer pipes that are on average 90 years old and deteriorating due to age. This is the equivalent of over 17 miles of sewer pipes. The three adjacent project areas will include construction in the Piedmont, Humboldt, Woodlawn and King neighborhoods.
In the Woodlawn and King neighborhoods, the work will include repairing about 61,000 feet (11 miles) of sewer pipes. The sewer repairs will enhance livability by improving sewer and storm water infrastructure, increasing sewer capacity, and reducing the risks of street flooding and sewage releases to homes, businesses and streets. Construction in Woodlawn-King will begin in early 2017 and take about a year to complete.

Portland combines sewer improvements that replace or repair Portland’s aging sewer pipes with green streets, ecoroofs, trees and other green infrastructure to increase sewer system efficiency, and protect water quality, public health, and the environment. Green infrastructure keeps stormwater out of the sewer system, filters pollutants provides habitat and increases neighborhood green space for healthier watersheds. Schools are the heart of our communities and children are the heart of our schools. King School needs your help in supporting our children’s academic growth and success. Almost no one would deny that a college education and a strong foundation in academic fundamentals is mandatory in our increasingly knowledge-based economy. Growing industries like science, technology, math and engineering rely on not only our students’ proficiency in language, but also a strong foundation in mathematical concepts.
Test results show that, upon graduation, fewer than half of Portland students are ready for college math. For many students the achievement gap starts early. At King Elementary School only 8 percent of students in 3rd grade are meeting or exceeding state standards in math. The district average is 56 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards for math in 3rd grade.
In an attempt to increase young children’s comfort with and exposure to foundational mathematical concepts, a parent group in collaboration with King School administration, teachers and the SUN community schools program is looking to offer a twice weekly two hour after school program called “Play Math!” The curriculum introduces progressively more challenging math concepts the same way that a video game provides more fun, stimulation and challenge with each level a player reaches.
We would like to involve King neighbors.
Can you share everyday problems you have that the children can help you to solve using math, or, talk about a career or hobby that you have that uses math? Do you ever have to do any of the following?
We need your stories and problems for the children to solve. Our class will be every Tuesday and Thursday in March from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Even if you cannot attend we would love to use your picture, story and problem for the students so that they can make the connection between what they are leaning, their neighbors and real world problems solved by math.
